Resisting Arrest: Mind Runs Amok!

By Day 3, I fully expected to be dealing with a reasonable
mind, ready on repeat mode for morning meditation.  But expectation always gets me into
trouble.  While I was greeted so far each
morning with a relatively calm, willing, and open self, today I was greeted by a
fugitive.  In fact, what I witnessed this
morning, was not so different than an episode of America’s Most Wanted.  Suffice it to say, I was greeted by a
criminal mind on the run.  This was a
mind that would stop at nothing to escape the chains of that oh-so-awful act of
meditation.  All the tactics were
used.  I was weak against this
out-of-its-mind mind.  I felt hijacked as
I watched it take control.

How would I subdue this criminal mind?   How could I capture it long enough to sit
down for just 10 minutes?  Today was
harder than ever.  I hadn’t slept enough
hours, and I was cranky.  This was really
why the criminal decided to show up.  I
knew it, but I wasn’t in charge anymore.
I was about to give up.  But then
somehow, I’d made a deal with this outlaw:
we would sit for just 5 minutes.
Five whole minutes.  Ugh.

Well, I’ll tell you that it was a truly unproductive five
minutes.  And while I did catch the wild mild long enough to serve its 5-10, it was by no means a victory of any kind.  Why?
Because the next 5 minutes went like this:

Me: “Those spicy lamb balls were quite tasty at Boqueria
last night.  I really need a cup of
coffee right about now.  Oh, and who was
that guy who actually decided to leave his house & appear in public with a
dirty-dish rag slapped around his forehead?
Yes, he was the ‘artsy’ type and perhaps that was supposed to look
‘cool’?  After all, he said he was a
painter, a dancer, a pilot, a creative director, AND a film maker.  Not to mention he also looked like a
traveling nomad with the dirty-dish rag.
Clearly someone seeking & in need of praise for his talents.   But
who was he, really?  Ok, so let’s go back
to the third eye now.”  Ding…ding…ding…my
5 minutes were up.  My mind had been
seriously on the loose the entire time!

Today’s Lesson:  It
takes a keen observational eye to watch the mind in action.  It takes a saint to then watch it patiently as it
does its thing.  And it will ultimately take a
well-trained militia mind to really apprehend a mind run amok.  All of this takes time & practice, and a
whole lot of energy to keep playing this game.
I will try to keep going & observing it all without judgment.
